Overview

Welcome to the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS). The faculty was established in 2008, with one academic programme - Bachelor of Art with Education (BAED) and later introduced certificate and Diploma in Library and Information Studies (Currently changed to Records, Archives and Library Management). The faculty has two departments namely: the Department of Humanities and the Department of Languages. On the one hand, The Bachelor of Arts with Education (BAED) programme prepares graduate teachers in the following subjects: Geography, History, English language, Literature in English, Kiswahili, Mathematics, Economics and ICT. A student enrolling for the Bachelor of Arts with Education programme has to opt for a combination of two teaching subjects from the provided subjects list. These teaching subjects are offered together with other two institutional courses –i.e. Development Studies and Social Ethics. All these subjects are taught by competent academic and supporting staff with vast experience in the higher education industry. On the other hand, graduates in the certificate and Diploma in Records, Archives and Library Management programme are prepared to serve in cross-cutting industries with diverse service provision related to records, archives and library services. Graduates in both the Bachelor of Arts with Education and certificate and diploma in records, archive and library management have enough knowledge and skills to put them at a competitive stage in the job market both nationally and internationally. The Center for Languages and African Studies (CLAS) in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences offers short courses programmes on languages (particularly Kiswahili language for foreigners) but also short courses on African cultures and traditions.

Apart from teaching, the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences engages in conducting research and community services that intend not only for academic growth of the staff but also for the purpose of finding solutions to social problems. The research results are published in both local and internal journals. The faculty has two Journals namely Ruaha Journal of Arts and Social Sciences (RUJASS) and Jarida la Fahari ya Kiswahili (JAFAKI) both published on biannual basis.

The faculty collaborates with other institutions inside and outside the country. For instance, the faculty has staff – student exchange programme with the University of Palermo and Turin University both in Italy and Marburg University in Germany. These collaborations are generally meant for internationalization and co-creation of education knowledge among the partner institutions.

The faculty academic operations are grounded in RUCU’s vision and mission that generally strives for not only academic excellence and moral finesse but also a holistic formation of our graduates.

You are welcome to join our faculty and remain part of the FASS family.
